When was the 170ps model introduced?
In what year,and..being such is it the same engine spec as the US 167 counterpart?

Hi Jesper,

Yeah..i´ve seen that as well.

Reason i ask really...is that from time to time i wonder if i´ve run into the 170PS models when working on my customers cars.

Me,i´ve got 3 engines íncluding the one in the car all in all..

That aside tho.
It is my understanding that at the intro of the 2.3-16 the power was declared as 185PS?
As such..i was kind of curious as to what year the 170PS models made their intro here in europe.

..and..as far as i´ve gathered the differences between the 170 and 185 ones is the ad of a catalyst and somewhat lesser compression?(9,7 vs 10,5)

OK mal schauen, es gab hier in Deutschland drei Versionen vom 2.3-16
709- 369; 190E 2.3-16 ECE; (136 kW) Bj-1984-85 vielleicht bis anfang 86
709- 388; 190E 2,3-16 Rüf; (130 kW) Bj-1985-86
709- 389; 190E 2.3-16 Kat; (125 kW) Bj-1986-88

Uhu.
So..in that case..
Where would i find these 709 numbers?

As far as my "reserve motoren"..what´s even worse..i´ve got them dirt cheap;),as not all that many around here really know what they are

Hi Jesper,

Uhu...ok.
In that case,is there really any practical way to tell them apart?

See..the catalyst laws were enforced in sweden in 88.
That means that most cars you run into that sported catalyst as new..has had them removed.
In other words..that is not a tell tale as far as what engine it might be.

yes you can tell them apart real' easy:
the newer engine with droped compression has a few more sensors on it's head and there for a little wider part for the sensors:
here you can see the difference:

my engine when i first got the car:

and just a couple months later..(at night)

You´re thinking of the difference in temp sensors?
