Biggest bore/stroke on a 2.3-16v

Beitragvon lebanese » 1. Jun 2019, 15:24

Dear All,

I have a w201 2.3-16v Mercedes-Benz, but unfortunately it is a KAT. kAT has been removed!
Engine: 102983 12 001332
Besides the high mileage, the compression ratio and the power of the KAT engines are not the best 8,7:1, compared to the ECE engine 10,5:1
I want to overhaul the engine and thinking, if possible to get a bigger capacity and higher compression ratio out of this block.
Like for example, if a 2.5 liters can be achieved out of a 2.3 when machining the bore to its respective tolerance.
Is this possible? I guess yes, Oettinger for example had the 2.6-16v by increasing the stroke and I guess many have already increased the capacity and mounted bigger pistons.
any recommendation?
I would, theoretically, increase the bore to certain tolerance and put bigger pistons and suitable rods and changes the valve cams to Dr. Schrick or Cat Cams for example.

The injection system will be then also adapted to this bigger capacity. I have from a 2.5-16v: KE Jetronic ECU, Injection distributor head, ignition ECU.

Next step, may be the ITB.

thanks in advance for your input.

I'd honestly don't do any bigger changes to that, without moving to a modern EFI system - especially when using special camshafts.
KE was never made to use that efficiently and putting much time, work and money into that, and then wasting a good portion by keeping any KE-related stuff... is not the way I'd go.

Also (almost) all of them changed the crankshafts, because the bore alone doesn't do the trick - as you don't want to end up with a minor difference, for all the effort.

On the other had, you could opt for a high revving engine, then you shouldn keep the stroke - then even more: Trash KE. ;)
(Well.. if it's in good condition: Sell it - people will pay some money, you can put into a modern EFI)

Dear Nagi,

many thanks for the reply.
Indeed, the EFI/ITB is a "must"; that's why i wrote in my thread: next step (after finishing the overhauling and having the engine tuned up and ready) to have an ITB system.

changing the crankshaft, was not on my list. I hope there is a way to have the tuning without touching it or start looking for another one (rare + $$$)

I was planning/budgeting: 4 pistons + 4 rods + 2 sport camshafts (incl. all their accessories) and of course the machining work.
I dont mean getting a ready kit from shelf, but at least a recommendation based on experience, where / what to order and what to do.
I prefer not to start experimenting ;)

regards :)
