Nah Frank.
It´s the opposing side.
Exhaust.

What´s more,it´s just the "raw" basic layout.

Don´t know if you recall, but i´m using slightly larger valves as well.
40*34 from Ferrea.

Have looked into what i could get my hands on as far as what HAS been done to these head, and i´ve also run a ported one on my old motor for a while, and that turned out well enough no doubt.
When we´ve investigated the flow balance of the 16V head on the flow bench they flow like there´s no tomorrow on the intake, and ..are slightly above average on the exhaust side.
Flow balance is actualy rather poor seing that, and hence why at least i feel it´s imperative to focus on the exhaust side seing that this will be a high end turbo motor.

Idea is to keep most of the port floor as i want to investigate the effects of what´s known as a "antireversion step" all the way through. This is also built into the ehxaust hedder itself.

Intake..as you note..will be biased a´la the old "klasse1" engines.
However,i´ve laid eyes on a few of the "home ported" ones over the yrs now,and most strike me as..for the lack of better words idiotic in layout.
Dimensions involved are massive, and seing the OEM flow of a 2.5 head..it at least beats me.

So..in essence, the idea here it to touch down with an entry diameter of 33mm on a 2 degree taper towards the valve bowl.
Likewise, the head leaves something to be desired as far as what´s called "unshrouding" in the combustion chamber.

Major difference i´m going to try out though compared to a "sauger" is that i´m going to lay back the squish areas.
Point being that induced squish as well as tumble(in contrast to a 8V head where it´s called swirl) diminshes according to me/us as most of the energy needed to keep the fuel emulison in suspension is already added by the turbocharger-seing the VAST amounts of air that is involved this time.

I´ll take pictures as i go along tho...don´t worry..

Yup..it´s all in a days work as they say.. :)

Anyways.
Continued a little today.

Again..for the sake of comparsion.
My modded head vs an OEM 2.5-16

Bild

..and then...the intake side.

Bild

versus the OEM 2.5-16.....

Bild

Intake ports have mainly been opened up diagonaly upwards/inwards-and frankly speaking there´s a LOT more to it than meets the eye.
The venturi now measures in at 29.5mm and entrance is at 33..

Anyways.

Todays crop then.

Bild

New plenum.Ample volume and with the homebrew intake stacks next to it.
The one to the right is still in the "raw".

Everything in sight is made up from 3mm gauge aluminium.6082 to be more exact.

Bild
..and as can be seen full radii of course.

Bild

As i cut the OEM oilfilterhousing down..i needed a new adapter for an OEM Merc filter, and then of as minescule proprtions as could be had.
This is the result, and again of course with AN12 weld bungs.

Bild

Yup..even e small bracket so we can bolt the POS up where we find space

Thing is..when done a LOT of the aluminium pts will get a turnaround trip for the anodizer bath..so don´t fret as far as finish go just yet.

So...back home.
The 2.5-16...followed me home :P

Jesus...why do people never learn?
Up here..it´s turning into winter in a hurry.
Snow..sub zero asf..

Well...as we got to "Flen"(name of the place where the car was at)..we were greeted by a car in ever BETTER condition that i would ever have anticipated seing what the owner was asking.

However..the car had a MAJOR flaw as stated...it wouldn´t start.
After some basic diagnosis..we concluded the car was running way way rich...however..
For those of you into the loop on K-jets...car came to life after backing the CO adjustment screw out SEVEN TURNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SEVEN TURNS!!!!!!!!!!!

Buuuuuuuut...with those SEVEN turns backed off...it idled and ran like nothing would stop it

So..seing that the car was taken off the road(probably due to the Kjet probs) it wasn´t really legal to drive it back on its own behalf...now was it...
Now..i own several cossies as you know,and...tic tac toe..the car was one turbocharged 85 vintage from gothenburg :D Street legal and all...

Turned the key..and started for home.
We obviously did SOMETHING right with the KE..cause it topped out 180km/h in third with ease!(it´s a 4 speed slush box car)

Bild

Any rust?
Of course, but very very minor...seing its a 91 vintage 2.5-16 i´d say its in remarkable shape!

Bild

Interior for the lack of better words looks like almost new...very VERY well taken care of.

Option list is a bit "odd" to say the least.
This being a "leichtbau" car-meaning it lacks sunroof, which is prefarable to me as that leaves more headroom when i install the roll cage.
It lack rear headrests..lacks leather...
On the other hand its got an automatic gearbox,AC and en electrical seat?

Whatever in essence, cause this is a chassis that is EXACTLY what the Dr ordered as far as i´m concerned.
It being a slushbox car also meaning that the sheet metal of the car will be less strained from previous use than a stick car.

It WAS one serious 500 mile roundtrip tho...and i´m honestly beat..

More?
Of course..as i said i´ve continued work on the plenum for the new motor.

Bild

Next up are the stacks to be welded to it...and then the diffusor aso..

Hi Jesper,

The gearbox is great!

I like my automatic gearbox. And there is noting better when you drive in the city with mutch traffic.

But thats not really the way that you like or need Jesper!?

Frank.
With everything said n done i paid 1800 euros for it,so...yes...i´m happy.
Point being that what i was after was a car WITHOUT sunroof for the "uberoll käfig" i plan to make out of aluminium to have room, and automatic car-as that will bring that the chassis/sheet metal is less stressed than for a stick car aso aso...so all in all i couldn´t have found a better object than this in my opinion.

Silver....as it´s what mercedes once used for their race cars..

Lude.
Nope..you´re correct..the gearbox is the least of my concerns...let´s just say there will be one...surplus as time progress ;)

Lude,so will i!!!

Well...if you need it...be my guest!

After the next couple of weeks as i start diggin into the car...it sure as hell is of no use to me anymore.

Spent the day with the newcomer as it didn´t run all that well and i want to be able to drive it a little to get a feel for it b4 i start chopping into it.

As ususal...the world is full of "experts".
Sure enough..some "expert" had adjusted the KE...however out of reasons NOT so apperant at first.

1/Only the first inline of the two fuelpumps was working.
Tossed them both out of there and replaced with one singular early series 16V pump.
Problem solved.

2/Took the valve cover off to check valve timing and valve clearance.
Turned out that-again-some "expert had changed the camchain because it was 2 full cogs to early.
So..adjusted that..

3/Now..as i have a number of spare KE units laying around i saw no reason what so ever to try n rectify what some idiot had destroyed as far as adjustment..so i installed a known fresh one.
Adjusted the CO...and...

Presto!!
We´ve got a very nice running 2.5-16 :D

Now..i´ll drive it for a couple of days and take care of various probs as they come to get a feel for the car.

Btw Lude.
Gearbox works just fine.
It´s HAS been worked on at some occasion as can clearly be seen by the modulator. There´s RTV(silicone) by it.
Further,it leaks ever so little from the pan gasket.

Spent some more time working on the car today, and we´re getting there i´d say.
Even got the SLS to work after changing the link for the "nivaueregler",but as i did that...and got the SLS to work again..i´ve got this ticking sound from it and you can even SEE how the pressure hose at the engine reacts to the pressure differences.
Whatever kind of...but still..
Ride is as it should be as is roadholding i´d say.
Got the ASD working too..
Fixed one of the switches for the electric seat adjustment.
Changed a number of broken instrument lamps..

Drove by a friend and picked up a new blaupunkt CD player, and it turned out that there IS a set of decent speakers in the car already-and i sure as hell ain´t gonna use the car to win any stereo contest with anyways...

Checked valve clearance on the engine and fiddled around with the CO and idle a bit..and it´s starting to run very very well indeed for a stocker i´d say,and for an automatic even more so.

Hey Jesper,

*lurks on with an evil eye on Frank*...;)

Frank.
The car might as well enjoy the last days of its life as a mundane passenger car WITH the KE onboard...cause it sure as hell ain´t gonna live especially long like that..

You know what they say..

Any idiot can restore a car.
It takes a REAL man to carve one up! :D

...and will we EVER carve this one up...

Thanx tho Frank, and yeah...i´ll take pics as we strive along with the project.
Rest assured.
