Getrag Re-build Information, Parts, etc.

Our gearboxes are 20 years old, and if yours are like mine, they have had hard use, are getting noisy and rattle a bit in neutral at idle: bearings wear, engagement forks wear and adjustments need re-shimming.

My spare gearbox goes in next week and I would love to get into the old box, tighten it up, look at possibly lightening the gears, up-grade the bearings where appropriate and bring it back to spec.

Perhaps one of our European members has access to Getrag info and can help us all out. Posting a PDF copy of a rebuild manual or even just the setting/wear tolerances would be a great help.

Are parts (new forks, bushes, etc) available?

They are fine gearboxes and contribute much to the character of the car.

Does anyone have any info on re-building these boxes or a source of parts?

welcome on this board.

Concerning these boxes - they seem to be pretty strong...

In case of need, parts for the gear box are listed in the EPC (Electronic Parts Catalogue) so they should be available via the dealership, but I've never tried it personally.

Used boxes are available here as well as new ones from MBGTC, just look at , price is less than half the official price so that is fair.

Procedures for repair can be found on the WIS CD, i.e. Workshop Manual on CD, there is a chapter dealing with the 717.404

So it looks to me that these boxes are not one of the problems of our cars.
