Uhu...
We´ve reasoned about this within the team during the day,and the only explanation we can come up with is that the shim must have been "overhardened" from the start.
See..the point is that sometimes when the hardening process isn´t VERY precisely controled hairline cracks might develop.
This is the ONLY reasonable explanation to what has happend.
This is where we´re at right now.Remains to have the valve cutouts done-and that will be come early next week.
Piston is of very similar design of the OEM 16V.
As can be seen...a forged Mahle as well, only at 1/4 the cost.
Still run a 24mm pistons pin. This for load and longevity reasons.
With this setup the axial play of the conrod is controled at the crankshaft end.(see one pic up).Point being that up at the piston end...there´s room for movement-a´la the early design 16V.

Nagi.
Last pic is of an engine mount.
Point is that the OEM 16V is WAY to soft to handle the torq of a souped up turbo engine.
So..this is ONE alternative.
It´s a transmission mount for a Volvo FL8 truck-and trust me...it´s a LOT tougher.
Other option would be to use engine mounts for a 300-24.That on the other hand isn´t approx 25 euro a piece.
Checking the crank for straightness, ovality and if its conical.
Turns out that the crank is completely ok efter a couple of whacks with the sledgehammer
The stressplate we´ve made.50mm thick steel. There to be torqued down over the deck of the block while boring it out.Point is that it´ll "simulate" the forces on the block that the head bolts omit, and by using the stressplate we´ll get more cylindrical bores under load.
Important to any high performance cast iron block.
We made the cylinder holes 98 mm to even cope with any EVO blocks that might come in our way
The "Volvo"/Mahle pistons.
Now with their valve cutouts done. Will cope with 14mm of valve lift at 109deg LCA.Final polish to come though.
So...today i droped the block off at my machinist.
We discussed a bit as far as honing stones and pistons play.
Ended up by settling for 1/10 of a mm and the 325 stones.
Also decided to "touch" the deck.Mainly to give the deck a fresh surface.
We decided on where to put the o-ring cut in the deck as well, and that took some time seing the "siamese" water slit in the deck.
But..i think we found a good compromise.
Block will be done in a week, and meanwhile i´m going to set the crank up to be balanced as well as the flywheel.
Bye
